I create weekly videos on:
- Helping civil and structural engineering students and graduates secure the best career opportunities in the structural engineering industry.
- Helping young structural engineers advance in their careers.
- Hints, tips, advice and my insights as a practicing structural engineer.
I'm a structural project manager in California with an undergraduate degree from Cal Poly Pomona and a master's degree from UC San Diego. My career so far has allowed me to design and manage various types of building structures, ranging from residential wood apartment buildings, commercial steel buildings, and concrete parking structures and towers.

Engineer Breaks Down Baltimore Bridge Collapse
Structural engineer Mathew Picardal explains the Baltimore bridge collapse (Francis Scott Key Bridge). How much impact force did the ship hit the bridge and how are bridges engineered to handle impacts from cargo ships, why the way the bridge collapsed was an engineer’s worst nightmare, and essentially, what does this mean for bridge engineering?

Very cool!
I know and understand the theory... But would never think of making one for this purpose! 🧐😮
earthquake wont kill you but the ball might
Plz help me, I am in final year, graduating as an architect and I want to do masters in structural engineering... Is it worth the hassle?
Concrete doesn't "dry" and people need to stop saying that, everything else is pretty accurate. Also, we can engineer chemically to dry in certain ways so that it doesn't shrink or crack but this is extremely expensive and i have never seen it used cosmetically.
This is one of those things that is so practically efficient and ridiculously extravagant that Im amazed it was OK'd by the city.
Bellsprout tower 🥂
I think it's depends coz if we provide the loose joints then the structure will collapse from earthquake and heavy winds And if we do provide rigid joints it will fully collapse so both have there pros and cons .
Perfectly shown, thx
È stato un Veneto a progettarlo
About 100 blue whales, Americans using anything but the metric system.
Cute little toy, but those joints will crack after the first earthquake from the stress of those spring beams.
STEEL. BALL. RUUUUN.
I too have a set of tuned mass balls to keep me from toppling over.
At least is not like tofu project from the west
There was an episode of life after people that talked about Taipei 101s mass damper system.
730 tons 😲
I get to go on one of those skyscraper and see and really took in at how massive the core is Honestly its amazing how it all works
Overworked and underpaid. Welcome to Civil Engineering!
Pendulum motion coutering the sway of the building.
Toxic indeed! How to change careers? Not so easy. I quit my PE electrical engr career.
This is why you're not supposed to go outside in an earthquake. You're actually safest staying inside and above ground.
Unless if your on china
Don't use springs
No tufo projects
Pretty sure the Chinese produced this a very long time ago. Just recycled ideas from the ancient architects
so when this peindulum hits the wall does'nt it destroy walls
I live in a city that has no earthquakes cause of it's geographic position but the wind is everywhere compared to you apparently
yep same I'm in a city that's at almost the center of a tectonic plate
What is that model called? I want some!
Хорошее видео для студентов
TBF the perceived magnitude was only around 5 in Taipei
So realistically it's best to build high in earthquake-prone areas, and low in areas surrounding major earthquake zones
No, it's just that because of how many large buildings are affected by earthquakes they have added protections in their engineering where most 1-3 story buildings don't need it. Tall skyscrapers tend to be a much bigger investment and pose a much greater risk should they fail in comparison to a 2 story building. In his demonstration he also has the legs installed in opposite planes for the smaller building vs the larger which is why the effect seems so dramatic. Things like building materials and weight also come into factor, but really the concept of how the shaking affects higher floors is one of the biggest challenges. The best way to visualize it is to put a tennis ball at the end of a 6' pole. At the base of the pole move it a few ° and look at the distance the ball moves. That effect gets more and more amplified the farther away the end point is from the ground. But as far as the short vs tall comparison, I actually was a superintendent on building Apple's new amazing campus and the amount of proprietary tech in the building is unfathomable. The building is only 4 stories above ground and 2 below and shaped like a giant circle but because it's in California they build the entire thing essentially on a giant set of 6' wide ballbearings that allow the whole building to sway. Just looking at California as a whole there is also a reason why most buildings are only a few stories tall with the exception of specialized buildings in major cities.
"but skyscrapers have a weakness" And it starts with 9
And ends with 1
9.11 magnitude earthquake
Boeing 747 doesn't start with a 9
Inside Job
It contains the snail
They’re not so safe to be in during a plane crash tho
I wanna meet the person who designs the interiors of these test buildings lol
Is this inspired from the Bellsprout tower in pokemon gold and silver?
You know you could add friction pads to those pistons and the building can generate a ton electricity too
They actually have a crew of magicians down there that help stabilize the building when an earthquake hits.
I wanna major in civil because i have interest in it, but i saw many negative thoughts about it 🥲🥲. So tough 😭
Wow! That was incredible! I do so love engineering
I'm impressed at the amount of corruption in the US's infrastructure. I thought that only happens in poor countries.
It was on purpose!!
That is badass
When the steel balls are really steeled
Tofudreg projects
With my luck that cradle would fail when I walk underneath it
It makes a sound. That’s really fascinating. Like it’s redistributing the kinetic energy into sound waves and like absorbing / redistributing the momentum
Its the same way dynamic dampeners work on the crankshaft
How do structual engineers make earthquakes??
